Biography

Ruchir Sharma is head of the global emerging markets equity team, portfolio manager, and member of the global tactical asset allocation investment committee at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. He is also portfolio manager at Van Kampen Asset Management.

Ruchir joined Morgan Stanley in 1996. He became co-head of the emerging markets team in 2003 and head in 2006. He is responsible for overall portfolio performance and construction and has day-to-day responsibilities for the Thai and Malaysian markets, focusing on country allocation. Prior to joining the firm, he was employed at Prime Securities in Delhi, where he helped run the firm’s foreign exchange business.

Ruchir writes a column for the international edition of Newsweek and regularly contributes articles to publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Economic Times. He also writes a regular column on global financial markets since 1991. In his latest book, Breakout Nations: In Pursuit of the Next Economic Miracles (2012), Ruchir contends that the possibility of India growing at a brisk and sustained pace in the future is only 50:50.
