Victor Gao on the implications of the Chinese leadership handover
It was good to have Victor Gao in the office last week. Victor is Executive Director of the International Committee of the Beijing Private Equity Association, former Senior Vice President at the China National Offshore Oil Corporation, and former English language interpreter for China’s Paramount Leader Deng Xiaoping.
A former diplomat, who has since worked extensively in investment banking and private equity in China, Victor has an interesting perspective on the key issues arising from the Chinese leadership handover.
In particular, he said:
1) Xi Jinping has been given a particularly strong mandate by the CCP elite to pursue his policy goals.
2) The new Chinese leadership will remain confident in its ability to tackle challenges relating to the economy and social stability
3) Much of China’s foreign policy will be driven by concerns for energy security. This means rapprochement witht he US will be high on the agenda.
