Every columnist and commentator has had their say about the supposed steely grip that the Murdoch clan, as owners of a newspaper empire, has held over British governments past and present. But, as Rory Cellan-Jones points out, it’s no longer newspapers and the old media that hold the key to winning voters over. It’s the, primarily US-based, technology companies like Apple and Google, who hold the information – and ability to influence people’s lives.
