The future of Britain
I was in Edinburgh last week, meeting clients and speakers. I was lucky to spend four years living in the city as a student and haven’t been back for a long time. The city’s business community is increasingly distracted by the looming referendum on Scottish independence, a cause none of the business people I met seemed to share. Here’s a recent article in (the excellent) Prospect magazine by Rory Stewart, the half Scottish MP for Penrith and The Border (and a widely admired writer and commentator on Afghanistan); Rory argues that the competing identities and loyalties within Britain are “key to our vitality”. “This deep and flexible identity is true to our natures, and to the modern world. Reducing our identity reduces ourselves.”
