Vivian Kong's Biography
Vivian Kong is Hong Kong’s “queen of fencing” and the world number one women’s épée fencer.
A two-time Asian championship winner, Vivian brought Hong Kong her first world fencing title when she won the FIE Women’s Épée World Cup in 2019. She also represented Hong Kong in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she beat former world champion Lyubov Shutova, and in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Vivian’s father encouraged her to pick up fencing by coining it the “ballet of sports’”. With a black belt in taekwondo, at the age of 11, Vivian decided to give fencing a go. It was only after her Olympic debut that she realized how much she loved the sport and decided to see how far she can go.
Vivian has since become a trailblazer in her sport. Despite having torn her ACL twice, she does not get discouraged. She even adopted a vegan diet to improve the quality of her training and recovery.
Proud to represent her country, Vivian dedicated her win at the 2019 World Fencing Championships in Budapest to the people of Hong Kong. For her groundbreaking achievements, Vivian was named the 2019 Female Athlete of the Year by the Hong Kong Sports Press Association. She has been featured in Prestige’s 40 under 40 and Tatler’s Asia Gen.T list, which recognises the leaders of tomorrow shaping Asia’ future.
Vivian strives to be an impactful voice in society by using her experience and profile as a top athlete to promote unity through sports. She has been invited to speak at schools, corporate organisations and sports associations. Vivian also actively participates in various public campaigns to raise awareness of social issues and support various charities.
As a Stanford graduate in International Relations, Vivian hopes to use the power of sport to contribute to humanity and peace.
