Sanjaya Baru's Biography
Sanjaya Baru is an Indian academic and author, specialising in international affairs.
He is the current Director for Geo-Economics and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Singapore, where he is leading a recently inaugurated research programme devoted to analysis of the interplay between economics and geopolitics at the global level. He has also served as Consulting Senior Fellow at IISS from September 2008.
A well-respected journalist and author, Sanjaya has in the past been editor of the Indian financial newspaper The Business Standard, chief editor of The Financial Express and associate editor of The Economic Times and The Times of India. He served as Official Spokesman and Media Advisor to the Prime Minister of India from May 2004 until August 2008.
Sanjaya has also taught at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations in New Delhi, and has served as a Member of India’s National Security Advisory Board in the Prime Minister’s Office. He is the author of the influential books “The Political Economy of Indian Sugar” (1990) and “Strategic Consequences of India’s Economic Performance” (2007).
