Patrick Utomi's Biography
Patrick Utomi is one of Nigeria’s prominent professors of political economy and management expert, a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants of Nigeria, and has twice been a candidate for the office of President of Nigeria. He has also served in senior positions in Government, as an Adviser to the President of Nigeria, the private sector and in academia.
Having studied in the U.S., Patrick returned to Nigeria in 1982 and at age 27 was appointed as a Special Assistant (Political Affairs) to the President of Nigeria. He later joined Volkswagen of Nigeria as an Assistant General Manager responsible for Corporate Affairs and within five years, he was named (acting) Managing Director.
In 1994, he became a Director of the Centre for Applied Economics at the Lagos Business School of Pan African University, a university which he co-founded along with Opus Dei, a Catholic religious group. He has been a scholar-in-residence at American University, Washington D.C. as well as a research associate at Harvard Business School.
He is active on the international speaking circuit, especially on the subjects of growth economics, comparative development, leadership, the curse of oil and China’s economic surge and growing influence in Africa.
Patrick has also recently been nominated and voted by the Public as one of Nigeria’s top ten Living Legends in the Vanguard/Silverbird Television Awards.
