Naomi Alderman Speaker:
Naomi Alderman is a British author and novelist. She grew up in London and attended Oxford University and UEA. Her first novel, Disobedience, about a New York rabbi’s lesbian daughter living in North London, was published in ten languages and won her the 2006 Orange Award for New Writers, the 2007 Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award, and a feature as one of the Waterstones 25 Writers for the Future.
Her prize-winning short fiction has appeared in Prospect, on BBC Radio 4 and in a number of anthologies. In 2009 she was shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award.
From 2004 to 2007 Naomi was lead writer on the BAFTA-shortlisted alternate reality game Perplex City. She’s written online games for Penguin, the BBC, and other clients. In 2011 she wrote the Doctor Who tie-in novel Borrowed Time. In 2012, she co-created the top-selling fitness game and audio adventure Zombies, Run! She writes a monthly technology column for The Guardian.
In 2012, Alderman was appointed Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, England. That same year she was also selected as a protégé by Margaret Atwood as part of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, an international philanthropic programme that pairs masters in their disciplines with emerging talents for a year of one-to-one creative exchange. In 2013, she was included in the Granta list of 20 best young writers. Her fourth novel, The Power , was published in 2016 and is a dystopian work influenced by and dedicated to Atwood. The Power won the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2017.
Naomi broadcasts regularly has guest-presented Front Row on BBC Radio 4 and writes regularly for Prospect and the Guardian.
