Marius Kloppers's Biography
Marius Kloppers is a South African businessman and was the CEO of BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, from 2007 to 2013. Previously, Marius had been appointed as Chief Commercial Officer of the company in December 2003 and Group President Non-Ferrous Materials and Executive Director in January 2006.
Despite an exceptionally difficult economic environment during his tenure, Marius and his team delivered for shareholders and significantly outperformed peers in terms of total shareholder returns. He drove new investments into next generation opportunities including US onshore gas and liquids and created one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Marius Kloppers has an extensive knowledge of the mining industry and BHP’s operations. Having worked in the industry since 1993, he has served as Chief Executive of Samancor Manganese (a progressive, innovation company) and has held various positions at Billiton Aluminium, including Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of Hillside Aluminium.
Marius was Chairman of the International Council on Mining and Metals (from October 2011 to May 2013) and former Deputy Chairman (from October 2008 to October 2011).
