Malika Saada Saar's Biography
Malika Saada Saar is a renowned human rights lawyer, policy expert, and advocate who has made groundbreaking contributions at the intersection of technology, democracy, and human rights. Currently a Senior Fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute, Malika focuses on the critical intersections of AI technologies, digital rights, and democratic institutions. Her pioneering work continues to shape global discourse on responsible AI and human rights governance.
She holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, an M.A. in Education from Stanford University, and a B.A. from Brown University. Saada Saar also serves on the Board of Governors at Brown University’s Watson Institute and the Peabody Board of Directors, where she leverages her expertise to influence institutional governance and policy.
As YouTube’s Global Head of Human Rights and Google’s Senior Counsel on Civil and Human Rights, Malika developed comprehensive strategies to integrate human rights principles into AI governance, Trust & Safety practices, and tech policy. She forged transformative partnerships with organizations such as UN Women and the UN High Commission for Refugees, setting new standards for responsible technology design.
Saada Saar’s leadership also extended to founding Rights4Girls, a legal advocacy organization that reshaped policies on child trafficking and gender-based violence, earning her recognition as one of 150 Women Who Shake the World by Newsweek. Beyond her impact on technology and advocacy, Malika has shaped national policies, including securing federal funding for at-risk families and ending the practice of shackling incarcerated mothers during childbirth in federal prisons.
