Liv Boeree's Biography
Liv Boeree is a science broadcaster, speaker, television presenter and former professional poker player whose Ted and TEDx talks have over three million views. As a sought-after speaker, she is interested in statistics, game theory, forecasting, artificial intelligence and effective philanthropy.
As a public speaker, Liv has hosted TED and TEDx talks and has spoken for clients including Oxford University Union, Cheltenham Science Festival, Websummit Dublin, Jesus College and at Effective Altruism Global, a beneficience conference on effectual and productive philanthropy at the Google headquarters in San Francisco.
Liv had an illustrious career as a professional poker player for over nine years. Nicknamed the “Iron Maiden”, she is ranked among the top ten female poker players in lifetime earnings. She joined Team PokerStars Pro in 2010 and remained with the team until retirement in 2019. She has been team manager for global poker league, The London Royals, since 2016. Liv was no stranger to the media during her poker career and appeared on several TV shows including Channel 4’s Shark Cage, NBC’s Heads Up Poker, BBC One’s BBC Breakfast and Poker Central’s Poker After Dark and European Poker Tour. She was invited to celebrate her European Poker Tour championship on ITV’s Good Morning Television and discussed game theory on the BBC 4 documentary The Joy of Winning.
Liv was awarded Female Player of the Year three consecutive times at the European Poker Awards from 2014-16. The European Poker Awards presented her with Europe’s Leading Lady award in 2010, and she is the only female to win the World Series of Poker and European Poker Tour championship.
Liv lent her skills to television broadcasting with a weekly co-hosting appearance on UK and Ireland Poker Tour. She hosted The Mind Control Freaks on the Discovery Channel, MindGamers on Red Bull TV and Weird Earth on The Weather Channel. Her gameshow appearances include Channel 4’s Codex and ITV’s Golden Balls. In 2020, she appeared in the Dutch film, The Host. In 2011, she and fellow celebrities from her alma mater, Manchester University, participated in the Celebrity Graduate team on BBC 2’s Christmas University Challenge.
Liv has published scientific, general interest and logical opinion pieces and articles for multiple outlets such as Vox.com, The Independent, Nature and Vice Media, and was a guest on the Mindscape podcast, where she discussed probability and effective altruism.
She is also a philanthropist who co-founded non-profit research and advising organisation Raising for Effective Giving (REG) in 2014, which employs practical altruism ideas and techniques to collect funds for the world’s most effective charities.
