Karun Chandhok's Biography
Karun Chandhok is an Indian racing driver, analyst, television presenter and consultant with vast experience in racing. He began racing at a young age and was named the youngest Asian Formula Champion at the Formula 2000 Asia championship in 2001 and is one of two Indian former Formula 1 drivers. He has had an exciting career in motorsport that has made him a popular speaker in the industry.
Karun is a Formula 1 analyst for Sky Sports, where he occasionally does live pit-lane reporting and commentary. He has had to present and report appearances on various British broadcasters as part of their Formula 1 coverage, including Channel 4 and the BBC. He also works as a consultant with the circuit design company Driven International to create and manufacture driving centres worldwide and upgrade current circuits.
As a racing driver, Karun had multiple wins and podium finishes in GP2 as part of the Durango and iSport International teams in 2007 and 2008. He then moved onto Formula One and joined Hispania Racing in 2010 and Lotus Racing in 2011. He has since been competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (2012), FIA GT Series (2013) and 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race (2013-17) he also joined the Mahindra racing in 2014, competing in the electric cars series, Formula E.
Karun is no stranger to the media as he has worked with Jeremy Clarkson on Powered Up, assisted Guy Martin as a driver coach on Speed with Guy Martin, appeared on Indian television in the Car & Bike Show on NDTV, and been featured on National Geographic documentaries and several Indian news channels. He is also a regular guest on Fifth Gear.
He is the youngest person to be on the board of Motorsport UK’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and sits on its Racial Diversity Sub-Committee where he is working on a strategy to have more inclusion and diversity in motorsport. Karun was invited to be a member and driver’s representative of the Driver Grading Committee and the FIA Single Seater Commission; he is tasked with representing drivers’ rights and views globally.
In his spare time, Chandhok organises Karun’s Karting Carnival, an annual charity event for underprivileged kids in India. The event, which is run through his family-run Vishnu Devananda Charitable Trust, is held in the UK summer and aims to raise funds for education.
