Joe Foweraker's Biography
Joe Foweraker currently researches and speaks widely on the nature and quality of the democratic systems of Latin America and how they impact on the region’s economic and financial performance.
Joe is Professor of Latin American Politics and Director of the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies at the University of Oxford. He has extensive fieldwork experience and has published widely on social mobilization, citizenship rights and the quality of democratic government in Latin America (including several books with the Cambridge and Oxford University Presses). He is also editor of an Encyclopedia of Democratic Thought and co-author of a textbook on Governing Latin America.
Joe was previously Professor of Government at the University of Essex, and he served as Executive Director of the European Consortium for Political Research from 2000-03. He has been a visiting professor at the universities of Pará (Brazil), Gainesville (Florida) and Boulder (Colorado), and a visiting research fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Washington DC) and the Centre for US-Mexican Studies (UC San Diego).
