Jessica Barker's Biography
Dr Jessica Barker is a cybersecurity consultant, CEO and award-winning leader in the human nature of network security with more than a decade of experience. As one of the UK’s top 20 most influential women in cybersecurity, she is highly respected in her field and sought-after for her captivating and thought-provoking speaking engagements in the sociology and psychology of cybersecurity.
Jessica co-founded cybersecurity organisation Cygenta in 2017, where she is Co-CEO. The risk management company uses a combination of security best practices derived from human, technical, and physical aspects to deliver a leading approach to tackling cybersecurity. Before this, Jessica ran her own consultancy company, and has experience in sociology and civic design, which she draws on to provide a unique understanding and perception of her extensive range of clients from mega conglomerates to ordinary end-users.
A distinguished keynote speaker, Jessica has delivered cybersecurity awareness addresses to global audiences in over 23 countries and has begun outreach sessions for school students. Her keen interest in cybersecurity awareness, culture and behaviour is evident in her approach to network security as a holistic undertaking. Jessica is the cybersecurity expert of choice for many prominent broadcast outlets, including Sky News, BBC News, Channel 4 News and Channel 5 News. She has appeared on BBC Radio programs such as Today and the Jeremy Vine show and featured in print media outlets such as Sunday Times, The Guardian and Grazia.
As an author, Jessica published her Amazon bestseller Confident Cyber Security in 2020. The book provides an excellent overview of cybersecurity and serves as a simplified and concise introductory guide to anyone interested in the topic, whether for personal or professional use. She co-authored and published another book Cybersecurity ABCs in 2021.
Jessica is on the Advisory Board of ClubCiso, a UK based global organisation that provides networks and support for information security leaders. At the 2017 TechWoman50 awards, Jessica was named one of the top 50 female influencers in technology, and has been named one of the UK’s top 20 most influential women in cybersecurity.
Jessica obtained a PhD in Civic Design and a Masters in Research Methodology from the University of Liverpool. These laurels complemented the Political and Social Studies degree she completed at The University of Sheffield.
As a distinguished keynote speaker who frequently delivers influential and positive speeches on network security, she was invited to be a lead speaker at the world’s leading security information conference RSA San Francisco in 2020. Jessica is highly sought-after for her speaking engagements that cover a range of topics, including social engineering, cybersecurity threats, the language of cybersecurity and effective cybersecurity message communication worldwide.
