Gerhard Cromme's Biography
Dr Gerhard Cromme was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of ThyssenKrupp AG from 2001 to 2013, and is one of the most influential personalities in the German business world.
Cromme started his career with the French group Compagnie de Saint-Gobain. In 1986 he moved to the Krupp Group, where by 1989 he was appointed CEO of the Group holding company. He then began a period of mergers that would have a defining impact upon the German Steel industry. In 1992 he oversaw the merger of Krupp and Hoesch, and then Thyssen in 1999 to create the ThyssenKrupp AG.
Dr Cromme has worked extensively with policy makers in both government and industry, serving as Chairman of the Government Commission, German Corporate Governance Code from 2001 to 2008. Widely recognised as a “business diplomat”, he gained recognition for his work building links between French and German industry. He remains a highly valued advisor to the German government and EU commission, serving on the European Round Table of Industrialists, which he chaired 2001 to 2005.
Since 2007 Dr Cromme has chaired the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG, Axel Springer AG and Saint-Gobain. Previously he has also held supervisory positions with Allianz SE, Lufthansa, BNP Paribas, Suez S. A., Volkswagen AG, ABB and Thales.
