Elena Salgado served in the Socialist Party government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero as Minister of Economy and Finance and Deputy Prime Minister of Spain from April 2009 until December 2011. She had previously been Health Minister from 2004 to 2007 and Public Administration Minister from 2007 to 2009.
Elena started her career in public administration as director of the Department of Studies in the Enterprise Ministry’s SME Institute. She then moved to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, where she was Director-General from 1985 to 1991, and the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Environment, where she was Secretary-General of Communications from 1991 to 1996.
Between 1997 and 2004 she held different positions in the private sector as director of Lenci Consulting, managing director of Vallermoso Telecom, chairwoman of 11811 Nueva Información Telefónica, and member of the board of directors of Abertis Telecom.
