Carl Bildt's Biography
Carl Bildt is a well-known and highly respected statesman, speaker and writer who has held many high-profile positions, including Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs. Known as a critical player in international diplomacy, Carl is a popular speaker, considered an expert on European politics who is always keen to share his insights on current events.
Carl was selected as a WHO special ambassador for the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator in 2021. The ACT Accelerator aims to expedite the discovery and fair distribution of COVID-19 diagnostics, treatments, and vaccinations by combining expertise and knowledge from public and commercial institutes worldwide. He served as chair of the Global Commission on Internet Governance, monitoring and reporting to policymakers on how they use the internet for communication.
In 2006, Carl was elected as Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. He became known as one of the most outspoken and passionate ministers of the time and was one of the architects of the EU’s Eastern Partnership, pushing the EU ahead on Middle East matters.
Carl is perhaps best known as Prime Minister of Sweden (1991-94). He headed the cabinet that negotiated and ratified Sweden’s entrance to the European Union.
Carl has held many senior political positions, including Special Representative for the Balkans to the United Nations Secretary-General, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, co-Chairman of the Dayton Peace Conference, Special Ambassador of the European Union to the Former Yugoslavia and head of the Moderate Party.
As one of the leading political figures, Carl has mediated peace treaties and arbitrated conflict settlements. He has been a trustee board member on several boards, including Friends of Europe, International Crisis Group (ICG), and the RAND Corporation. He is an advisory member of the Centre for European Reform, Munich Security Conference and the Stockholm Resilience Centre.
