Ateh Jewel's Biography
Ateh Jewel is a multi award-winning journalist, producer, director, broadcaster, influencer, beauty expert and diversity advocate. She is an excellent speaker on diversity and why it is important – especially in the beauty industry. She is particularly interested in the history of beauty, and beauty’s ability to reflect our cultural values.
Ateh has worked as a journalist for over 20 years, specialising in social commentary and campaigning for diversity in the beauty industry. She has written for the likes of Vogue, Sunday Times Style, Red Magazine, The Guardian, The Daily Mail, the Financial Times, the Independent, amongst others. She was a columnist for Grazia, Boots Health and Beauty Magazine and Marie Claire.
As an expert in her field, she regularly features on This Morning, Good Morning Britain, CNN, BBC 5 Live, BBC Radio 2, in addition to lecturing and sitting on judging panels for CEW, P&G, Unilever, Adwoa Aboah’s GURLS TALK X REVLON and GURLS TALK X NIKE.
She is also the author of award-winning blog, jeweltonesbeauty.com, aimed at men and women with darker skin tones. Ateh has a large social media following, and hosts a weekly Instagram Live show ‘Wednesday Chat Club’, guests of which include Ruby Hammer MBE, MAC’s Terry Barber and Nichola Joss. She has collaborated with several well-known brands including Kerastase, Superdrug, Estee Lauder, Aveda, and Avon, amongst others.
With the aim to create a safe space to further BLM and real social justice, Ateh launched the Dr Ateh Jewel Education Foundation. The foundation works with top universities, The University of Oxford, Bristol University and London College of Fashion, to support black and mixed heritage students through university, by encouraging excellence, ambition and potential.
She also Co-Founded production company, Couture Communications. Clients include L’OREAL, Chanel, Dior, and London Fashion Week, their films have won international awards and were shortlisted for an Oscar.
Ateh was the recipient of the CEW 2020 Achiever Award in recognition of the her work on diversity in the beauty industry over the past 20 years. She also sits on the advisory board of the British Beauty Council, and in 2018, she was awarded an honorary doctorate in Media from Solent University.
Ateh completed a History degree at the University of Bristol.
