Great article by award-winning sports journalist Matthew Syed in the Times today on “the national treasure” David Beckham.  Matthew discusses Beckham’s career, image and behaviour, claiming: “If he isn’t a role model, someone for young people to aspire to, who is?” He praises the footballer’s exceptional work ethic, “resolve and purpose”, dedication and “courteous, assiduous and punctual” character, arguing that Beckham’s career and choices have always been an inspiration.

Interestingly, Matthew also notes Beckham’s “one-man mission to obliterate the one-dimensional caricature of masculinity that had taken root in the 1970s and 1980s”, commending the football star for ignoring advice and challenging stereotypes.
