Keeping the Lights On: Tony Hayward & Tim Webb
As the Times Hosted their CEO summit “Britain: Aiming for the top”, Tony Hayward, current CEO of Genel Energy and former BP CEO, and the Times Energy Editor, Tim Webb reported on the costs of tackling climate change.
Tim Web suggested “Government needs to be honest – tackling climate change will be costly”, suggesting that attempts to balance consumer bills and a green agenda have led to a disingenuous debate.
Tony Hayward suggests that cost will force “pragmatism to overrule political desire to decarbonise, that is where we are heading already”; “Gas will bail the country out… There is a lot of low-cost gas in the world. It will be available int he next decade or two for the UK.”
With blackouts threatening oncoming British winters, the debate on energy will no doubt spiral on.
