David Owen on restructuring Europe
Former British Foreign Secretary David Owen has published a timely book on how the European Union might restructure in the wake of the (ongoing) crisis in the Eurozone. Owen’s objective is to re-organise the current EU in a way that provides a sustainable home for those European states who want to pool their sovereignty and accept political as well as fiscal union (the official direction of traevl established by the EU’s French and German founding fathers), and states like the UK which wish to remain self governing. He adds his voice to calls for a UK referendum on its relationship with Europe, but opposes a straight ‘in or out’ question, which he believes would force the UK out of the EU altogether. Here’s a reaction by Michael White, the Guardian’s Political Editor.
