Writing in this week’s Spectator, Christopher Caldwell warns that America’s divided government “will be the country’s ruin”, and describes next year’s Presidential election as a choice “about the fundamental direction of the country”.

Caldwell describes the options before the US people as between “Obama’s social democratic terms” and “the Tea Party’s watchman-state terms”. The logic of the situation, he believes, favours the Tea Party.
