Renaissance in Detroit?
Had a cappuccino with The Economist’s Vijay Vaitheeswaran on Tuesday. Vijay is en route to China, where he will be the newspaper’s first ever China Business and Finance Editor. An experienced keynoter, panellist and provocateur, Vijay’s sweetspots include global healthcare systems (he used to be The Economists’s healthcare correspondent), business strategy and innovation. And now Chinese business best practice.
He is bullish about the medium term potential of manufacturing firms in the US (and to a lesser extent Europe) to leverage new technologies and stay ahead of their low cost competitors in Asia. Given recent events on London’s streets and markets, Vijay’s confidence in the future was rather refreshing…
Vijay has a new book (Need, Greed and Speed, Harper Collins) on global release next spring. Will keep you posted.
