Pedal power: British adventurer Sarah Outen endures the trans-US/Canada cycle leg of her round the world expedition

Sarah Outen speakerBritish adventurer Sarah Outen is three quarters of the way through a gruelling global expedition from London2London:Via the World, in which she is attempting to loop the planet using human power.

She started in a kayak under Tower Bridge on April 1st 2011 and since then has kayaked, cycled, rowed and kayaked again east across land and oceans to Alaska. She is now cycling across North America to the East Coast from where she will row home across the North Atlantic in the spring and summer of 2015, aiming to reach Tower Bridge once more in the autumn of 2015.

Sarah is fundraising for charities along the way as well as sharing stories and visiting schools to inspire others to take on their own challenges. If all goes to plan, she’ll be in NYC for a couple of weeks in March for speaking opportunities, using tales of her journeys to draw out learnings and ideas that can be applied from classrooms to boardrooms.

Sarah Outen’s extraordinary “London2London: Via the World” journey continues

Sarah OutenAfter 4,300 miles, 150 days, and surviving encounters with sharks, storms, and hallucinations, British adventurer and motivational speaker Sarah Outen has returned from the latest leg of her rowing expedition – London2London: Via the World – as the Independent reports.

This most recent excursion saw Sarah row between Japan and Alaska, her second attempt on the North Pacific after the first attempt in 2013 ended in rescue. The initial plan was to row to Canada, but severe weather hampered these efforts. The course consequently changed to the Aleutian Islands, which took Sarah over halfway through her bid to row around the world.

Her ocean manager, Tony Humphreys, commented that “knowing how stormy the weather is and how rough the ocean can get around here, the locals think it’s just crazy anyone could arrive in Adak from Japan in a rowing boat”.

Whilst completing such feats, Sarah also found the time to successfully propose to her girlfriend, Lucy, using the romantic medium of satellite technology mid-ocean.

“I have had some of the most intense and memorable months of my life out on the Pacific,” she said. “It has been brilliant and brutal at the same time. And it has been a privilege”.

The explorer’s campaign will continue next year, by returning to Alaska to kayak the island chain back to the mainland, before cycling through the winters of Canada and the USA to the east coast. The final push will see Sarah ‘row home’ across the North Atlantic – we wish her the best of luck!
