Mitt Romney and Evander Holyfield help raise $1M in charity boxing match

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and five-time heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield squared off in the ring at a charity boxing match in Salt Lake City.

The black-tie affair raised money for the Utah-based organisation CharityVision, which helps doctors in developing countries perform surgeries to restore vision in people with curable blindness. The pair previously released a hype video, which can be seen below.

Romney, 68, and Holyfield, 52, sparred for just two short rounds before Mitt threw in the towel, giving up a round early in the light-hearted fight that came amid several other fights by professional boxers and an auction.

“He’s the oldest person that I ever fought. He’s the smallest person I ever fought,” Holyfield said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for that”.

Following the good-natured match, Holyfield commented that “For a man who’s never got in the ring to box, he can throw a jab…He can move around. I was impressed.”

Corporate sponsorships for the event ranged from $25,000 to $250,000. Organisers say they raised at least $1 million.

Mitt Romney lends a helping hand with Charity Vision in India

Mitt Romney in India

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, along with his sons Matt and Josh and grandkids Nick, Chloe, Grace and Wyatt, have recently returned from nine days in India, helping out with Charity Vision. Charity Vision provides surgery for the very poor in twenty-five of the poorest countries in the world; Josh is the part-time and volunteer president of the charity, and is responsible for getting all the Romney’s involved.

Together with 14 people who had generously donated to the charity, Mitt and his family “performed vision screenings for school children and for the elderly…lifted spirits at an orphanage…[and] witnessed the miracle of restored vision for individuals who had long suffered from cataract blindness.” On looking back over the experience, Mitt commented that “We return home with greater appreciation, both for India and for America.”
