Widely acknowledged as one of Britain’s most popular news presenters, Sir Trevor McDonald OBE presented ITV’s bi-weekly flagship Current Affairs programme, Tonight, from 1999 to 2007. During this time he interviewed President Bush on two occasions and other major political figures such as Tony Blair, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Hillary Clinton and other senior politicians. In January 2008 Sir Trevor returned to ITV News, for one year, to copresent the re-launched News at Ten.
More recently he has presented a number of documentaries for ITV1, including Secret Caribbean, Secret Mediterranean, The Mighty Mississippi and Inside Death Row. He is currently working on a new documentary series for ITV. In a departure from his regular role he has also presented Have I Got News For You and the rival topical comedy show, News Knight.
Sir Trevor began his career in Trinidad as a newsreader and interviewer. After joining ITN, he was first assigned to cover the Troubles in Northern Ireland before becoming Sports Correspondent, reporting on Kerry Packer’s Cricket World Series in Australia. His next role was Diplomatic Correspondent and Editor at Channel 4 News.
Sir Trevor has interviewed many of the world’s leading political figures. He interviewed Mandela on his release from prison, and in a very different vein he secured the only British TV interview with Saddam Hussein.
He has written biographies of the West Indian cricketers Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd, as well as his own autobiography “Fortunate Circumstances” (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1993).
