One of the most celebrated authors of all time

Received a Queen’s Knighthood for “services to literature” (2008)

Thought-provoking proponent of free speech

Sir Salman Rushdie is one of the most celebrated contemporary authors globally. A brilliant provocateur, he’s penned a handful of classic novels that have influenced a generation of writers. He stands as both a pop culture icon and one of the most thought-provoking proponents for free speech today.

The author of eleven novels, Salman is a noted public intellectual and recipient of many of the world’s top literary prizes, including: the Booker Prize for fiction (1981), the Aristeion Literary Prize (1996) and the Golden Pen award for “a Lifetime’s Distinguished Service to Literature” (2010). A Fellow of the British Royal Society of Literature, his books have been translated into over forty languages.

Salman has received the Freedom of the City in Mexico City, Strasbourg and El Paso, and the Edgerton Prize of the American Civil Liberties Union. In 2007 he received a Knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours; he also holds the rank of Commandeur in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres – France’s highest artistic honour.

Salman delivers passionate and thoughtful lectures on the nature and meaning of ‘free speech’ and human rights. He has served for two years as President of the PEN American Center, the world’s oldest human rights organisation. Salman is an Honorary Professor in the Humanities at M.I.T, and University Distinguished Professor at Emory University.

Our Comment

"In his spellbinding lectures, Salman braids together the worlds of literature, politics and philosophy - a show of intellectual pyrotechnics and deadpan humour that conveys fully the texture of modern life."
