Sir Nicholas Soames has been a British Conservative Party Member of Parliament for 30 years. He has specialist and detailed knowledge in the fields of defence, Europe, international affairs, trade and industry, and family legacies.
Prior to joining the public sector, Sir Nicholas worked as a stockbroker before becoming Personal Assistant to Sir James Goldsmith, where he gained valuable experience in the manufacturing, service and finance industries in both the USA and Europe. Sir Nicholas went on to work on the staff of a United States Senator in Washington DC for two years, after which he joined a firm of Lloyds Brokers as a Director.
Having represented Mid Sussex since 1997, his extensive Ministerial career includes serving as Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1992-94) and as Minister of State for the Armed Forces (1994-97). Between 2003 and 2005 Sir Nicholas served as Shadow Secretary of State for Defence and as a member of the Shadow Cabinet.
Sir Nicholas takes a very active role on the backbenches. He is President of the Conservative Middle East Council and he Co-Chairs the Cross Party Group on Balanced Migration with Frank Field MP. He was made a Privy Counsellor in July 2011.
He is a Trustee of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Game and Wildlife Conservation Group. He is also a Trustee of the Amber Foundation and he sits on the Court of the University of Sussex. Since 2010, Sir Nicholas has also been chairman of the private security contractor Aegis.
