First female president of Chile (2006-10)
Executive Director of UN women (2010-13)
President pro tempore of the Union of South American Nations (2008-2009)
Michelle Bachelet is a former President of Chile and a leading politician on the international stage.
Campaigning on a platform of expanding Chile’s free-market policies whilst increasing social benefits to combat inequality, she was elected the country’s first female President in 2006.
In 2010 she founded her own think-tank, Fundación Dialoga, with the aim to bring centre-left thought, ideas, dialogue and actions to Chilean politics. 2010 was also the year she became Executive Director of UN Women, a new entity working for the empowerment of women and girls the world over.
In March 2013 she announced she would be stepping down from these commitments to focus on running as Chilean presidential candidate for the November 2013 elections.
