Marie Kondo Speaker Profile:
Founder of the KonMari Method, Marie Kondo is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of “Spark Joy” (2016) and “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” (2011) (also a best seller in Japan, Germany, and the UK) and was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2015. Although she is an accomplished author, she is primarily an organizational consultant; someone who people hire to help them get their home life physically in order by applying her KonMari method of organization. The KonMari Method is a way of life and a state of mind that encourages cherishing the things that spark joy in people’s lives through, what some would consider to be, extreme organization. With this method, people’s personal belongings, if they no longer spark joy, are acknowledged for their service and thanked before being discarded. Millions of people are drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being introspective, mindful, and optimistic. There have been countless cases of people claiming that Marie Kondo and her “miracle method” not only helped them be more comfortable in their own homes, feel more positive about themselves, and be more productive in their career and personal endeavors, but that it radically changed their lives for the better.
Marie Kondo spent five years as an attendant maiden at a Shinto shrine in Japan. When she was 19 years old, she founded her organizing consulting business as a sociology student at Tokyo Woman’s Christian University. She has had a considerable interest in organization since childhood. In junior school, Kondo would be the bookshelf manager for her classes and even spend time organizing the classroom while the other kids were in physical education class. She said that she experienced a breakthrough in organizing one day, “I was obsessed with what I could throw away. One day, I had a kind of nervous breakdown and fainted. I was unconscious for two hours. When I came to, I heard a mysterious voice, like some god of tidying telling me to look at my things more closely. I realized my mistake: I was only looking for things to throw out. What I should be doing is finding the things I want to keep; identifying the things that make you happy: that is the work of tidying.”
