Magic Johnson Speaker Profile:
Having achieved every imaginable goal from a player’s perspective, Earvin Magic Johnson embarked on another basketball-related ambition in 1994 when he began his first year as the Lakers’ Vice President.
Magic Johnson’s illustrious playing career, which consisted of hundreds of highlights, is most accurately summarised with a single word – winner. He was the guiding force behind championship-winning teams at every conceivable level, including high school, college, and professional, in addition to capturing an Olympic Gold Medal. During his 12-year NBA career, Magic Johnson led the Lakers to five NBA championships (1980, 82, 85, 87, 88) and nine appearances in the NBA Finals. He was named the NBA’s “Most Valuable Player” on three occasions (1987, 89, 90), NBA Finals MVP three times (1980, 82, 87), earned All-NBA First Team honours nine times, and participated in 11 All-Star Games and concluded his career as the league’s all-time assist leader.
After announcing his retirement from the NBA on November 7, 1991 due to the HIV virus, Magic Johnson’s immense popularity resulted in his being voted as a starter in the 1992 All-Star Game, during which he promptly earned MVP honours. Later that year, he became a member of the 1992 United States gold- medal winning Olympic basketball team in Barcelona. Magic Johnson retired ranked among the Lakers’ all-time leaders in virtually every statistical category, averaging 19.7 points, 11.4 assists and 7.3 rebounds in 874 career regular season contests.
Still a commanding presence in the sports world, he made history in 2012 when he became co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a Major League Baseball franchise that was purchased for an astronomical $2 billion dollars. It was the highest purchase price for any professional sports team at the time. He also co-owns the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA and Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club.
Johnson continues to expand his influence through a number of other investments. He currently has controlling interests in EquiTrust, a $17 billion financial services company, ASPiRE, an African-American television network, and SodexoMAGIC, a food service and facilities management company.
The Lansing native is constantly evolving and remaining relevant in a dynamic digital age by broadening his scope into infrastructure and technology. Through a newly formed fund, Johnson is investing millions of dollars on infrastructure improvement in the United States. Operating under the philosophy that true success is making others successful, he is one of the leading investors in a number of minority-owned tech companies that include Unchartered Play, a company dedicated to producing clean power energy-generating play products; ShotTracker, a company that makes wearable technology for basketball players that helps track player and ball movement; Jopwell, a diversity and hiring recruiting platform; Walker & Co Brands, a company that develops health and beauty products for people of color; and MiTú, the Latino-fueled media brand and digital network that connects thousands of Latin content creators with viewers around the world. He is deliberate in his investment strategy to bring positive impact to the community.
