Luis Figo is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of his generation. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he played as a midfielder for Sporting Clube de Portugal, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Internazionale.
His career highlights include several trophy wins, such as one Portuguese Cup, four La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups, three Spanish Super Cups, one UEFA Champions League title, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, one UEFA-CONMEBOL Intercontinental Cup, four Serie A titles, one TIM Italian Cup and three Italian Super Cups.
Figo won 127 caps for the Portuguese national football team, representing them at three European Championships, two World Cups and scoring 32 goals for his country in the process.
He was the 2000 European Footballer of the Year, the 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year, and was named amongst the FIFA 100.
Since retiring as a player in May 2009, Figo has remained a prominent figure in the sport. He was outspoken in condemning the corruption uncovered in FIFA in 2015, and announced that he would run against Sepp Blatter for the position of FIFA President. His endorsers included José Mourinho and David Beckham. However, on May 21st he announced that he’d would be withdrawing from the race, citing frustrations with the electoral process: “This process is a plebiciscite for the delivery of absolute power to one man [Sepp Blatter] – something I refuse to go along with.
