Leading financier and analyst
George Soros is a Hungarian-American business magnate, investor and philanthropist.
In 1969 George founded Soros Fund Management, one of the most profitable firms in the hedge fund industry, averaging a 20% annual rate of return over four decades. The fund became famous in September 1992, when it sold short more than $10 billion in pounds, profiting from the UK government’s reluctance to either raise its interest rates to levels comparable to those of other European Exchange Rate Mechanism countries or to float its currency.
In July 2011 George announced that he plans to end his hedge fund career. His fund will shut itself to outside investors due to changes in financial regulation and focus solely on handling investments for George and his family.
George also supports a number of progressive and liberal causes. Between 1979 and 2011, he gave away over $8 billion to human rights, public health, and education causes. He is the Chairman of the Open Society Institute, a private foundation aiming to create ‘open societies’ by shaping public policy, developing civil society organisations and promoting democratic governance, human rights and social reform. Despite working as an investor and currency speculator, he argues that the current system of financial speculation undermines healthy economic development in many underdeveloped countries.
