Sir David Tang is a natural entrepreneur with a global and expansive portfolio of successful businesses in the luxury service and produce sectors.
In 1991 he founded the China Club, styled with his trademark retro-chic, in Hong Kong with affiliate executive clubs in Beijing and Shanghai. He continued the success launching the China Tang restaurant in London’s Dorchester and the Island Tang restaurant in Hong Kong. In 1995 he founded the Pacific Cigar Company Ltd, the exclusive distributor of Cuban cigars in Canada, Asia, Australia and the South Pacific.
Notably, in 1994 he pioneered China’s first international luxury brand, Shanghai Tang, a fusion of traditional Han and modern styling across ready-to-wear clothing, accessories and home décor. Since selling the brand to Swiss-based Richmond in 2006 he has remained indomitably active, serving as director and advisor to companies such as Blackstone, Tommy Hilfiger and the Savoy Groups of hotels.
Sir David remains passionately involved with the arts, serving 15 years as a trustee to the Royal Academy of the Arts and chairman of the Asia- Pacific Acquisitions committee at the Tate; Advisor to the London Symphony and English Chamber Orchestras he is also president of the Bach society and governor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
A conscientious philanthropist, founder of the Hong Kong cancer fund, vice-chairman of the European Organization for Research David is also president of the Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association, and patron of the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation.
