Ben Sasse Speaker Profile:
A fifth-generation Nebraskan, Ben Sasse was born on February 22, 1972, in Plainview, Nebraska, the son of Gary and Linda Sasse. In 1994, Sasse graduated with a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard University. He later graduated from St. John’s College with a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in 1998. On top of all of that, he has achieved a Master of Philosophy, Master of Arts, and a PhD in history from Yale University in 2004. His dissertation, The Anti-Madalyn Majority: Secular Left, Religious Right, and the Rise of Reagan’s America, won the Theron Rockwell Field and George Washington Egleston Prizes.
Shortly after republican Mike Johanns announced that he would not be running for the 2014 re-election, Ben Sasse announced his candidacy for Johanns seat. By October of 2013, Sasse’s funding totaled almost $815,000, breaking the previous Nebraskan record of $526,000 in 2007 by the previous chair-holder and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Johanns. During his run for senate candidacy, Sasse became known as the “anti-Obamacare candidate,” expressing profound opposition for the act passed by the residing president. Sasse went as far as to say that “if [the act] lives, America as we know it will die.” He is also a pro-life republican, stating that “even one abortion is too many.” He is also the author of the book the “Vanishing American Adult,” (2017) a sort of parenting guide that discusses the idea that the younger generations are not ready to take control of the world that they are going to one day inherit.
Sasse is a firm believer in generational giving. In other words, he believes that we have an obligation to pass down a great and free country to our children, just as our ancestors before us. Doing so, according to Sasse, requires a more serious congress committed to reformation and genuine transparency regarding national spending and international affairs as well as educating the next generation in the ways of opportunity and optimism, regardless of race or class.
