Founder and Director, Feminist Frequency (2009-present)
Well-known pop culture media critic
Creator of highly publicised kickstarter campaign
Anita Sarkessian is a Canadian-American feminist, media critic, blogger, and Director of Feminist Frequency, a video web-series that looks at, critiques and occasionally celebrates representations in popular culture specifically looking at gender, sexuality, race, class and ability in the mass media. Her work focuses on de-constructing the stereotypes and tropes associated with women in popular culture as well as highlighting issues surrounding the targeted harassment of women in online and gaming spaces.
On May 17, 2012, Anita began a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new series of short videos that would examine gender tropes in video games. This was featured as a campaign of note on the official Kickstarter blog, which reached its funding goal of $6,000 within 24 hours. The project triggered a campaign of sexist harassment towards Anita, who in turn posted examples of the harassment on her blog. Supporters responded by donating over $150,000 to her project.
Anita has been interviewed and featured in publications such as Forbes, Wired, The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. In 2014 Anita was the recipient of the 2014 Game Developers Choice Ambassador Award, she was given a 2013 honorary award from National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers and was nominated for Microsoft’s 2014 Women in Games Ambassador Award.
