Jeremy Paxman has made a career out of ruthlessly interrogating politicians and other powerful figures, and is well known for acerbic put-downs directed at the know-it-alls as a presenter on the University Challenge TV quiz show.

In recent comments to the Radio Times, however, he confessed that he failed to get on to the St Catharine’s College (Oxford) University Challenge team. “I did have a go. I didn’t get chosen!” Jeremy was quick to point out that a quiz was a “very particular thing” and failing doesn’t reflect on ones mental ability or general knowledge, which will be comforting for students across the nation.

Perhaps he should have threatened to overrule them?
