The German Election

The economic powerhouse of Europe goes to the polls in September 2013 as Angela Merkel looks to secure a third term in office. However, Merkel’s centre-right coalition is in trouble, it has lost twelve consecutive regional elections and has struggled to convert her personal popularity into votes. Germany is the most populous nation in the EU and accounts for over one fifth of its GDP. Economic recovery in Europe is dependent on German prosperity, but how will the election affect the Eurozone? Will Merkel need to find new coalition partners? And what are the implications for Britain? We are joined by British ambassador to Berlin (2007-2010), Sir Michael Arthur and German-born Labour MP, EU expert Gisela Stuart to discuss the upcoming German election.
