This morning we hosted our Olympic-themed Breakfast Club at the RAC, with former Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell, Gold-medal winning Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and Olympic Gold medallist Steve Williams.

Despite the financial doom and gloom of recent years, Tessa made a very compelling case for why London hosting the 2012 Olympic Games is something to get excited about, from an economic perspective. When the steel for the stadium is coming from Bolton and the turf from Scunthorpe, and with 1,500 contracts going to firms across the country, it is difficult to believe that it’s not in the whole of the UK’s interest – whether you’ve tickets to watch the world-class athletes compete in the 100m final at the Olympic stadium or beach volleyball on Horse Guards Parade or not – to host the Games.

Tessa’s account of winning the 2012 bid, combined with Tanni and Steve’s own experiences of what it’s like to compete at the Olympic Games, made for a gold standard event.

With only 155 days to go, the mood in the room after the brilliant discussion was one of “Bring on the Games!”
